Chiddy Bang: Breakfast (Album Review)
So I've been at Logan Airport for 4.5 hrs already and have another 4 to go until my flight leaves. Long story short, New England weather is garbage. Nonetheless, it's safe to say that I have plenty of time on my hands. With that said, I figure I would review my favorite (spoiler alert) hip hop album to be released so far this year, Chiddy Bang's Breakfast, which I have been meaning to do for a bit now.
Before I get into the album, let me put Chiddy's rise to fame in perspective. They released their debut mixtape, The Swelly Express, in mid-2009. Now that's under 3 years ago. Currently, two additional mixtapes later, Chiddy has released their debut album to amazing success, now standing as the #9 album on iTunes and #2 hip-hop album on iTunes (formerly #1). From the Drexel University dorm room to the top of the iTunes charts in about 3 years? In the words of Kanye, "that sh*t cray!"
Now for the album. Literally every song on the CD bumps. Xaphoon implements the group's classic recipe: heavy bass, synth, claps, and a bit of funky electronic sounds. Many of the beats are, admittedly similar (but still different enough). This isn't a negative to me, though. These strong beats, coupled with Chiddy's consistently ill flow, lyrics, and punch lines, create songs that I keep coming back to time and time again. Chiddy Bang has found a style that works and they are taking advantage of it. You won't hear me complaining.
Leading up to the album release, Chiddy had released three singles: "Mind Your Manners", "Ray Charles", and "Baby Roulette". Each were successful. Each I loved. Each need no further comments. As for the rest of the album my three favorite songs have to be "Handclaps & Guitars", "Whatever We Want", and "Does She Love Me?". The main feeling I felt throughout the album is that high-energy, fun sense of excitement. Chiddy's music always has that power to lift my mood. The lyrics and subject matter are always fun & light hearted and the beats are always energetic.
Even with the release of the album, Chiddy continues to put out new music. I definitely recommend you check out "By My Side" and "What Did You Do" immediately. Both of those tracks, though they aren't on the album, definitely deserve to be.
In the end, if you are looking for a high energy album, with dope lyrics and beats that you can play straight through on a Friday night, Breakfast is definitely for you. Seasoned Chiddy Bang fans will undoubtedly enjoy it and Chiddy Bang's fun sound will bring in new fans as well with this release. One last thing, please go out and buy this album. Chiddy has given us three great mixtapes and countless additional singles over the years for free. Now, with their first official release, say thank you by showing your support with a purchase. Chiddy Bang does so much and cares so much for their fans that it's only right for us to do our part and show our appreciation. Go get it!
